Growing maize on Rwanda's hillsides

Growing maize on Rwanda's hillsides

Kamonyi's hills give good rain and fertile soil, but slopes need care.

  • Plant along contour lines to slow water and reduce erosion.
  • Use spacing of about 75 cm between rows and 25–30 cm between plants.
  • Apply DAP at planting and Urea when plants are knee high.
  • Add compost to keep the soil alive year after year.
